Chapter Four All that is Gold does not Glitter

“So, this is the fifth heaven described as being made of quicksilver; with a guardian of hellfire,” Ahava stated in a tired voice to Etel-Pisha.

Etel-Pisha nodded as the two were on the edge of the stairs leading to the sphere. They had been sent forward to scout out the next sphere to challenge the group of adventures.

Ahava commented with a tone of curiosity, “This sphere is certainly the smallest of the heavens that we’ve had to travel through.”

To his estimation, the silver sphere was only about fifty meters in diameter. This compared to some of the others that were close to a kilometer in diameter, it was decidedly small. The fifth heaven had a perfectly smooth outer surface with only a hole in the side where it seemed you could gain access to the inside.

Ahava said, “What do you think is inside?”

“A guardian of hellfire,” replied Etel-Pisha as he smiled with his forced wittiness.

“Thank you, that was most enlightening. I’m going to check out the interior by myself. Tell the others to wait here for me to finish,” instructed Ahava as he moved forward.

The young magician turned back as he made his way down the twisting stairway to intercept the rest of the party. Ahava looked at him and was hoping that the rest of the group would get some rest while he dealt with this fiery monster. With the battle last night, it had been a long day already, and they certainly needed a break.

With a sigh of exasperation, as this was certainly more of an expedition than he expected when he entered the pyramid to get to the shrine. He looked back at the circular hole in the silvery sphere at the edge of the platform. The edges of the hole seemed to be perfectly smooth, as if they were polished silver metal.

He could see a dazzling silver light ray being emitted from inside the sphere like a torch. The shininess reminded him of the polished reflection plate he had seen on some of the palaces. When he looked into the hole, he saw a polished silver interior like a mirror coating the inside of a perfect sphere.

It was a vast ball that looked to be about the same size as the outside. With trepidation at what he would meet inside, Ahava pulled himself into the hole. Then sitting down, on the edge, he let himself slide to the bottom of the silvery sphere. At first, the fall was quite steep, but soon the curve started to flatten out as he kept sliding along the surface.

After some time, as he was sliding, he slowly stopped finding himself on the mostly flat bottom of the inside of the ball. He looked back and saw that the hole he had entered the silver sphere through had closed silently behind him.

“I guess that I should have expected that,” he muttered to himself.

In the silence of the inside, he stood up and looked around. He was at the bottom of the interior of what just seemed to be around ball of silver.
